Original Medicare does not provide broad dental insurance. In most cases, you pay the full cost of routine dental care, including:

  • Exams and cleanings
  • Fillings
  • Routine tooth extractions
  • Dentures
  • Dental plates
  • Most dental implants

When Can Medicare Cover Dental Services?

Medicare may cover dental care needed for certain covered medical treatments to succeed. This can include an oral exam or necessary dental treatment before certain organ transplants or heart valve procedures, or as part of certain cancer treatments. It can also include eligible exams and treatment for dental infections before and during covered dialysis.

Your dental and medical teams must work together and document why the dental care is needed for the covered treatment. Having a diagnosis does not by itself make routine dental work covered. Medicare still does not cover ordinary dental care after medical treatment ends. Necessary dental care linked to ongoing medical treatment may be covered.

Part A may also cover certain hospital costs when a dental procedure must be performed in a hospital because of an underlying medical condition or the severity of the procedure. Even if Medicare covers the hospital stay, it may not cover every dentist’s charge. Part B may pay for eligible dental care linked to medical treatment. Ask each provider which services they will bill.

Review Medicare's current dental-services coverage before treatment.

What About Medicare Advantage?

Many Medicare Advantage plans advertise extra dental benefits. Coverage varies and may include annual exams, cleanings, X-rays, fillings, dentures, or an allowance toward other services.

Check:

  • Which dentists are in-network
  • Annual maximums
  • Copayments or coinsurance
  • Waiting periods
  • Frequency limits
  • Whether you need approval before treatment, called prior authorization
  • Which services are excluded

An advertised dental allowance is not necessarily the amount the plan will pay for every procedure.

Before dental care linked to medical treatment, ask the dentist and medical team how they will document the connection and which charges Medicare is expected to cover. For routine dental benefits under Advantage, get an estimate for the exact procedure from the plan and dentist.
